The Do’s and Don’ts of Opening a Home-Based Salon

Dreams of opening your own beauty salon can be an exciting thought, but when it comes to the idea of working in a commercial property where overheads, outgoings and expenses will all be taken into account, it can seem really daunting. However most budding entrepreneurs look a little closer to home as a way of dipping their toes in the water, so we have compiled the list of do’s and don’ts of opening a home-based salon.

  1. Don’t be scared to take the commitment. You’ve been dreaming of this for as long as you can remember and now you’ve got the chance of opening up your very own salon in the comfort of your home. Take the leap, you won’t know whether it will be a success until you try.
  2. Do treat your home-based salon like you would any other business; approached with a professional, proficient and business-like mindset. Just because your new business is run from your own home, doesn’t mean it should be any less professional than if you were opening up within a commercial property.
  3. Don’t just move the furniture in your spare bedroom to one side to cram in all of your business materials. Just like you would in a salon, create your own treatment room where clients can come and relax. It needs to be a home away from home for your clients, but still needs to have the look and feel of a ‘high street’ treatment room. You want your clients to pay for your service so you need to show them a relaxing, calm and professional setting to give them the best experience possible.
  4. Do ensure that you are getting all of the relevant checks done before opening up your business to clients. You will need to check with your mortgage provide, home insurer and the local council to see whether you are allowed to run a business within your home. Many contracts have a clause that will restrict you from using your home for business use.
  5. Do set restricted working hours. Yes you are running a business, but your clients will be coming in and out of your home on a daily/weekly basis. If you have a family, you may want to consider having strict working and opening hours that your clients are aware of. Working from home gives you the option to be flexible around other commitments, so factor this in before opening your doors.
  6. Don’t let your clients dictate your terms. You need to establish boundaries and rules, like you would in any other salon. If a client doesn’t show or is running late, how is this going to impact your income and/or your other appointments that day? Ensure all of your clients know what to expect and make sure you don’t over-stretch yourself.
  7. Do consider having a separate toilet facility for your clients so that you aren’t opening up your whole home. However if this can’t be avoided, ensure that all areas where your clients will be walking through are kept neat and tidy.
  8. Do write a business plan and marketing strategy. These will help you visualise where you want your business to go and how you will help to grow. Also as a business run from your own home, you won’t have the benefit of a shopfront like you would with a commercial premises, so you will need to work a lot harder at marketing your business. Consider getting yourself a website with a ‘welcome offer’ for clients’ first visits.
  9. Don’t forget about industry trends. Whilst you won’t be in the hustle and bustle of a commercial environment, you must still ensure you are keeping up to date with the latest trends and actively working to learn new skills and update your treatment and services list to suit. Your potential clients already have a lot of choice, so give them a reason to come to your home-based salon over a bigger salon nearby.
